WOW! Over a whole month has passed by since I have updated on my blog! And so much has happened! On November 27th we drove along the windy road of Hana. If you get a chance look up the road on google maps. Its ridiculous! It was the most beautiful, crazy, sick and scary road I have ever been on! We got up early to beat the tourists! The road started out windy and there were two lanes so we thought, what the heck! this isn't so bad! And then the road narrowed substantially and really there was only room for one car. Every turn led to another and another and another. We were nauseous by the eighth mile along the road! There were small bridges everywhere and turns over 180 degrees were not uncommon! It was so scary driving along the road because here I am inching along at around 5-10mph (which is really all you can do) and the locals come flying around corners going so fast! I swear I though we were going to die at least 100 times!! With all the stops for mini hikes and pull offs for taking pictures and checking out beaches, it took us 2.5 hours to get to Hana (which was 30 miles away).
Unfortunately none of these photos are in any real order....its kind of annoying and difficult to post and then move around photos!
This was at one of the pull offs. The waves were huge and were crashing all around us! It was breathtaking!
Eating fresh warm banana bread from a stand on the side of the road....YUM!!
We went into a lava tube, this is the opening. I was sooo scared! It was so dark!
It used to be a nuclear fallout shelter!
There were lots of cool rocks and stalagmites and stalactites! This lava tube used to be a beef slaughterhouse. The owner had 10,000 pounds worth of bones removed before anyone could go down and tour it.
This was at one of the state parks. It was absolutely gorgeous! Lots of black sand beaches.
Signature pose!
We are behind the church where Charles Lindbergh is buried!
Here is the church where Lindbergh is buried.
His grave!
Another picture of the church. We weren't able to go inside but it was a beautiful quaint old church.
Behind the church again enjoying the gorgeous view! Lindbergh certainly picked a beautiful location!
On a short side hike.
We heart the trees!
Nic being a goof!
Pretty flower along the path!
Nic is about to try and pull a Tarzan and climb up the vines. (Oh and he failed by the way!)
Taking pics of a pretty waterfall! There were so many amazing waterfalls along the side of the road to hike into!
A black sand beach.
Black sand!
Another beautiful flower!
AMAZING view!
Waterfall!
Once we got to Hana, there was literally nothing. It was the lamest town! But we didn't mind because it really wasn't Hana we were going to see, it was the drive there. Nic was totally car sick at this point, and so was I! Although Nic was a sweetheart and let me drive, otherwise I would have been vomiting! We were hardly over with our trip though as we decided to drive around the other side of the island instead of going back the way we came. The drive changed from jungle to almost New Englandy with rolling hills and farms, lots of green and even some pine trees! Then it turned to total desert. It was the craziest thing! All in all it was an amazing drive. We finished up the day with going to the movies to see Unstoppable, which we highly recommend!!
There are lots of cattle ranches on this side of the island.
Total desert!
