Lahaina

We finally got out to see more of Hawaii yesterday. We went to Lahaina and it was beautiful and SO HOT! We totally got more tan! It was a beautiful town with a lot of interesting historical sites. Unfortunately we were unable to tour any museums or houses as it was Sunday and most of them were closed. We are planning on going back to check them out though! Lahaina used to be a huge whaler town so there are forts and prisons for sailors and missionary homes and sailors homes. It's really interesting! We also saw a HUGE Banyan tree. I'm not sure if its the biggest one but it was huge. The town is basically centered around it. It has 16 trunks! We tried to take a picture but there is no way to capture the whole tree. The water was beautiful and there were so many people swimming, surfing and paddling boarding, even kayaking! It was so different from the side of the island where we are staying. We have read that Hawaii is home to 11 of the world's 13 climates! Isn't that incredible?

Anyways we took the bus to and from Lahaina. A woman actually offered to give us a ride to the main bus station and we let her. Hitch hiking is pretty safe and normal here. She turned out to be an Native American who had lived in Lisbon Falls right where I used to live! And she used to live in Gainesville which is where we want to go to school. Small world right?

The bus was $1 each time you got on the bus which is so awesome! We are going to try and buy bikes instead of renting a car cus the bus holds bikes and the bus route goes most places around the island so that will save us a lot of money while giving us a good workout at the same time!!

We mostly just walked around and took in the sites of Lahaina. It was so quaint and beautiful. We had fantastic Vegi burgers for lunch at a place called The Cool Cat. We got to sit on a balcony and look over the whole town. Lahaina is known more for its mall and shopping centers than for beaches. There was a small beach but mainly it is pretty rocky along the coast. So...we STILL haven't been to the beach or in the water but....we are still getting situated and will definitely get to the beach sometime in the VERY near future.

We were exhausted by the end of yesterday but not tired enough to watch a movie! :) We watched The Switch with Jennifer Aniston and some other famous guy...it was super cute! We are no longer watching  Desperate Housewives because we got to Season 5 and now it SUCKS! I am sooooo disappointed! :( Oh yeah and the rain finally stopped here so now we have SUN!!!!!!

We have mainly been working outside and in the cottages. There is a lot of work to do! We are getting rid of trash, weed whacking and doing a whole bunch of other dirty work! I learned how to take care of and clean the pool and hot tubs and Nic is learning weed whacking and mowing! We really only have to do 4 hours of work a day which is really nice! We can do extra if we want so that the next week we don't have to do as much or we can do extra to save up hours! Also Sharyn (the woman we work for) has said we can borrow her car if we work 3.5 hours extra! What a deal! She's really great! We both love her.

I'm trying to think of everything that I haven't said yet but....I think I have covered quite a bit. We did see a huge gross centipede! YUCK! I'm so scared of getting bit by one. Its supposed to hurt like hell and swell up like crazy! I'll try and get some more pics on here as soon as I take more.

Much love to our families! We miss ya'll like super duper CRAZY!!!

  1. A giant centipede-I want a picture. Actually, you can photograph all the insects for me, I'd love to see them.

  2. You are creating nice pictures for us with your words. I can almost feel the heat here, even though the ave. temp. is hovering near 50. Actually the day you were on the beach, Peter, Nate, Isaac and I had a lovely picnic on a beach near our home here in Northeast. Peter got in the water! The sun shown right on us, heating us up. We were all thinking of you guys that day. Everyone wants to go to Hawaii, you are setting a great example. Love you both, Aunt Amy
